THE HISTORY OF PILGRIMS REST GOLF CLUB
The Pilgrims Rest Golf Club was founded on Monday 12th September 1932, at a public meeting held in the Pilgrims Rest Hotel. The patron was Mr. C.L. Reid while Mr. Diering, The Mine Manager, of the Transvaal Gold Mining EstatesLtd. (TGME) was elected as President, Mr.B Gardener as Chairman and Mr. N.Bailey as secretary.
The mapping of the course was undertaken by Mr.Gardener in collaboration with Mr.W.D.Sinclair and Major C.Millard. The greens were to be 25ft x 30ft and the tees 6ft x 4 ft. Mr.Lapin, a local storekeeper, provided the salaries and food for the workers. The cups for the greens were made by Messrs. Gardener and Berge. The membership fees were £2.00 for men and £1.00 for women, while the green fees were 1 shilling.
4 NOVEMBER 1932: In order to raise funds for the official opening, a dance was held in the Recreation Hall and an amount of £16.00 was raised that night.
1 AUGUST 1933; The clubhouse was built for £15.00 by Messrs. Williamson & Sinclair. The golf course originally extended to the black school (now the stables), but due to the problems with the local occupants, it was decided to extend the course in the opposite direction towards the Morgenzon area.
16 MAY 1940: The name was changed to T.G.M.E. Golf Club.
4 OCTOBER 1949: It was decided to build a new and more secure club house and a brick building was erected for £220.00.
2 AUGUST 1962: Dr.C.Jacobs proposed that hot water and washbasins be provided, and that the kitchen be enlarged
OCTOBER 1962: The work was completed, which included showers and a new toilet system.
22 OCTOBER 1985: The club house was demolished and was replaced by the existing stonne building, which was an old school building in Rustenburg. The structure was transferred stone by stone and re-erected on it's present site.
7 DECEMBER 1985: The present clubhouse was offically opened by Mr.Cruywagen, the then administrator of the old Transvaal Provincial Administration.
1992: The committee increased the size of the greens and reseeded them, to provide an all-season surface.
2002 NAME CHANGE: Since TGME had long since stopped it's operations, and the club was funded by it's members only, it was decided to rename the name to "Pilgrims Rest Golf Club".
